SureScripts showcased Dr. Alan Silken's experience utilizing DrFirst's Rcopia through the eRx Collaborative in a case study that can be found at
www.surescripts.com. Dr. Silken states: "I have found it (Rcopia) to be the most comprehensive and efficient e-prescribing program for myself and my staff. I went from 10 minutes (per renewal request) to less than a minute and in most cases seconds. All my renewals can be found in one place, and overall I went from spending two hours a day on renewals to 30 minutes each day."

"Battle-hardened CIOs are emerging victorious in their war against cost and security, the twin foes of enabling access to electronic medical records via the Internet...The cost of an electronic medical records system was restrictive for Potomac Physician Associates...So Winston and the group practice (PPA)opted to purchase an Internet-based electronic medical record, from DrFirst Inc., Rockville, Md...."

"DrFirst.com is an application service provider (ASP) that provides physicians with communication, practice management, EMR and business productivity solutions...The Holy Grail is an infinitely-connected device that is infinitely available. But the answer for now may be a combination of a wireless touch-screen tablet in the office and a Palm or PocketPC device with limited data to carry with you..."

"The application, called Rcopia, verifies the authenticity of the prescription, checks for drug interactions and accesses insurance reimbursement information...Physicians are able to access the system using a computer, handheld device or cell phone. It also allows for a secure transmission of patient medical information.

"...the first Internet-based, end-to-end medical practice management network that operates with legacy systems and keeps patient records within the doctor's office..."

"Doylestown Hospital has been impressed with the scope of Rcopia 3.0 as it relates to our CPOE initiatives. Rcopia provides a comprehensive solution that is not limited to the physician's setting. We pride ourselves in being at the forefront of healthcare technology and our relationship with DrFirst allows us to maintain this position..."
A Capital Idea to Reduce Errors
(February 25, 2003) A year-long pilot project in the Baltimore-Washington region will study the effectiveness of electronic prescriptions to reduce medication errors and improve the efficiency of the prescription process. Some 200 physicians will participate, along with local payer organizations and pharmacies.
The payers, including Aetna, Cigna, CareFirst and First Health, are members of the Council for Affordable Quality Healthcare, a collaborative effort to encourage the use of electronic prescription and formulary compliance services. Physicians in the project include some affiliated with MedStar Health, a seven-hospital integrated delivery system in Columbia, Md., and existing users of electronic prescription software from DrFirst, Rockville, Md.
During the pilot, physicians will use the DrFirst software to create electronic prescriptions. Physicians will submit the transactions to area pharmacies via the Internet or fax. Ensign and Safeway pharmacies, among others, have agreed to accept the prescriptions and help analyze the impact of electronic prescriptions on reducing pharmacist workloads and cutting errors resulting from poor handwriting.
Physicians using the software will be able to screen prescriptions for drug or allergy interactions and access patient coverage information from the Council for Affordable Quality Healthcare's Web-based Formulary DataSource.
Vendor Unveils 'Affordable' CPOE
(April 02, 2003) DrFirst Inc., a vendor of physician practice management and electronic medical records software, has introduced a computerized physician order entry system it touts as far more affordable than many systems on the market.
First Consulting Group Inc., Long Beach, Calif., recently estimated a 500-bed hospital with 25,000 annual admissions could spend nearly $8 million to implement a CPOE system. In contrast, DrFirst's system, called the Rcopia Enterprise Engine, would cost in the "low six figures" for the same facility, says Peter Kaufman, M.D., chief medical officer at the Rockville, Md.-based vendor. "We're not trying to pass this off as a full CPOE system, but as a place to start," Kaufman says. "You're using a computer and physicians are entering orders."
The Rcopia software integrates with an organization's existing clinical, pharmacy and practice management information systems. The software, for inpatient and outpatient settings, is available through standalone or remotely hosted platforms and works off desktop or hand-held computing devices.
SureScripts Certifies e-Script App
(October 28, 2003) Alexandria, Va.-based SureScripts, which is developing a national electronic prescription network linking physicians and pharmacies, has certified the Rcopia prescribing software from DrFirst Inc., Rockville, Md.
Certification means the software conforms to SCRIPT Version 4.2 standard message formats from the National Council for Prescription Drug Programs and that the software can successfully exchange prescription data between physicians and pharmacies via the SureScripts network. SureScripts expects to have half of the nation's pharmacies connected to its network by the end of this year. Other vendors with SureScripts-certified software include InstantDx LLC of Gaithersburg, Md., and A4 Health Systems of Cary, N.C.
Dr. First also has announced the Massachusetts Medical Society has endorsed Rcopia under an agreement that makes the software available at a reduced price to its 18,000 members. Terms of the agreement were not disclosed.
